What is a Triangle?

A triangle is a polygon with three sides, three angles, and three vertices. It's the simplest polygon you can create.

Parts of a Triangle

  • Sides: The three line segments that form the triangle.
  • Angles: The three interior angles formed by the intersection of the sides.
  • Vertices: The points where the sides meet.

Types of Triangles

Triangles can be classified based on their sides or angles:

Based on Sides

  • Equilateral triangle: All three sides are equal in length.
  • Isosceles triangle: Two sides are equal in length.
  • Scalene triangle: All three sides have different lengths.  

Based on Angles

  • Acute triangle: All angles are less than 90 degrees.
  • Right triangle: One angle is exactly 90 degrees.
  • Obtuse triangle: One angle is greater than 90 degrees.  

Examples of Triangles in Real Life

Triangles are found everywhere around us. Here are some examples:

  • Traffic signs: Many traffic signs are triangular in shape, like yield signs.
  • Sandwich: A cut of a sandwich often forms a triangle.
  • Pyramid: The base of a pyramid is often a triangle.
  • Sails: The shape of a sail on a sailboat is often triangular.
  • Musical instruments: The shape of a guitar pick is triangular.
